On Wings of a Dream: Children’s Story
Project “The greatest formal talent is worthless if it does not
serve a creativity which is capable of shaping the cosmos.”
~ Albert Einstein
Humans are storytellers, and what we pass on to future generations
about who we are individually and as a species is embedded
in the stories we tell. Historically, we engaged in guiding
ourselves through myths and lore. In the westernized or “modern” world,
myth came to be viewed as useless fantasy or worse yet, false
and irrelevant. Myths were, therefore, discounted in deference
to scientific thinking. Rather than viewing life as a dynamic
process, interconnected with all things, the fascination of
this new science was to isolate and control specific functions.
The universe became mechanized. Yet, this science is sterile
and far too small to instruct the whole of the human psyche.
Fortunately, there has been a resurgence of honoring the power
of myth through the work of people like Joseph Campbell and
Carl Jung.
Although stories never stopped being created, because it is
the essence of how life continues, there has been a divergence
from using stories powerfully and for fulfilling our highest
potentials. Instead, we are creating our future unconsciously
and to a large extent based on the lowest of our qualities: violence,
psychologically dark horror, and shallow self interests. The
medium for conveying these stories has been film, television,
video games, advertising, and so forth. We are in need of new
myths, consciously created for the purpose of helping us to realize
the best of who we are, if in fact we are concerned about the
state of the world.
Too often people who work to change the world are called dreamers,
as if they suffer from an illusion that they have the power to
change their reality. The fact is that each of us is changing
the world every day, with every thought and at an increasingly
rapid pace. Why not do it consciously? We will never redirect
our course if we are using the same maps, and acting out the
same scenarios we always have, and on some level anticipating
the same outcomes.
You see things; and you say, "Why?" But I dream things
that never were; and I say, "Why not?"
~ George Bernard Shaw
The initial phase of the project will be to develop story templates
based on specific archetypes, and to some extent the essence
of ancient myths that always have and always will speak to
what it is to be human. The stories are then customized for
the child based on an energetic reading, similar to what a
medical intuitive would do. In addition to any unique details
that come forth, the reading would address what gifts that
child has brought to this life and what challenges they may
face in realizing their highest potential. Readings will never
be done without the permission of the parent, guardian, or
the child him or herself. The template that most closely relates
to the reading would be integrated with the specific details
to create the customized story. This will be the only way to
make the process somewhat cost effective. There are currently
businesses that do something similar with creating personalized
romance novels. Hopefully, the story will resonate with the
child and become resource information they can access when
they find themselves in similar situations to what was played
out in the story.
The stories will be recorded as CDs and we will look to ways
to make them interactive to engage more of the child’s
senses and to hold their attention. Given that many children
are not auditory learners, this will be an important consideration.
At the beginning of an audio story we may suggest props to have
on hand for acting the stories out, either alone or with others.
In summarizing this vision I would say these stories are a way
of bringing into industrialized culture what has always been
known to the people like those of Burkina Faso. Among the people
who live very traditionally—or closely connected to life
in the larger context—there is a high degree of developed
telepathy. When a child is conceived they believe its spirit
is still traveling around the universe for the first trimester.
At the end of the first trimester the soul of the child then
enters the fetus in the mother’s womb to begin orienting
to the mother and the world. It is at that point that all of
the women of the village collectively gather around the mother
to ask the child who they are and what gifts they are brining.
The spirit of the child communicates its name and purpose and
all of the women get the transmission simultaneously. They then
sing the child’s name and personal story back to it in
the womb. At the time of birth they sing the song to the child
once again. The babies are said to be born laughing. During the
course of that person’s life, if they do something disruptive
to the social order all of the people of the village gather around
them and sing the song back to them again. They sing it over
and over again and the person ends up weeping in their remembering.
The surrounding circle of people bring their hands together to
collectively touch the person and then return to their activities.
It is said they have no recidivism.
Westernized, linear-science based cultures are too far from
this collective wisdom and ability to telepathically communicate
and self-correct. However, more and more people are returning
to a deeper remembering of who they are individually and collectively.
The customized On Wings of a Dream stories are meant to be touchstones
for children to find their way in the world without forgetting
who they really are and what their unique journey holds for them.
As the process is developed, we will hone our listening abilities
to better connect with the spirit of the child so that we may
serve them. In addition, the stories will evolve, speaking to
ever changing needs of society.
